著者は Dick Francis　　イギリスのチャンピョン・ジョッキーから作家に転進した。　
惜しくも2010年に死去。　それまで毎年のように発表された新作に楽しんできた。　
競馬シリーズとして、４４冊が刊行されたが、どれも水準作以上の出来で驚かされる。
日本では競馬シリーズと銘うたれたので食わず嫌いの人が多いと思われ、損をした
一面がある。　一番好きなのは「興奮」であるが、残念ながらAudio bookが出ていない。
そこでシド・ハーレーが登場する連作は四冊あるが、最高傑作とも言われる「利腕」
もAudio bookが見つからない。　それで、シドが初登場した「大穴」に落ち着いた。　
どんな逆境にも怯まず立ち向かうジョンブル魂とイギリス人らしいユーモアセンスが
楽しめる。　シドの生き方は、まさにいい男のお手本のようなもの。　義父との交情も、
真の友人との絆は、かくありたいもの、と思わせるようにヴィヴィッドに書かれている。
