" HOLES " 著者は Louis Sachar 　翻訳書は講談社文庫で「穴」の題名で出版され
ている。　オーディオブックも刊行されており、ディズニーが映画化してDVDも発売さ
れている。　もっともディズニー映画のヒーローは美男子と決まっていて、原作の
太って鈍重な少年が、過酷な穴掘りの労働でたくましく変わってゆく姿が見られな
かったのが残念。　しかし収容所の女所長がエイリアンのシガニー・ウィーバーや
看守のジョン・ボイドなど名優でかためていて見ごたえがある。
　児童書の名作として定着し、ペーパーバックを読み始める一冊目として多くの人が
手に取っている。　しかし、児童書は生活語や日常語が多く、受験英語に慣れた
日本人には難しいといわれる。　とっかかりの一冊目がこうでは、萎えてしまいそう。
